Remote Deposit is a service that allows you to scan checks and then transmit the images from your place of business directly to your bank account. In other words, the checks you receive at your various remote locations can be scanned to create a "digital" deposit from the convenience of your office. Your deposit is then transmitted electronically over a highly encrypted Internet connection to the bank. All of this can be accomplished with either of the small devices shown below.

This process became possible after October 2003 when the United States congress passed the very historic legislation commonly referred to as "Check 21". Implemented in October 2004, "Check 21" allows banks to clear the checks they receive based upon images of the original items. This eliminates the need to physically transport the original paper checks among the banks involved thereby reducing the opportunity for fraud.
